Last heard on Heinz Holliger's Lieder ohne Worte, Austrian pianist Thomas Larcher's solo debut for the New Series brings pieces by Schonberg and Schubert into unlikely, but extremely effective, juxtaposition, making a cycle out of their "Klavierstucke". Eduard Steuermann's observation that Schonberg's op. 11 should be "played like a Schubert impromptu" provided a starting point for Larcher's project which casts new light on both composers, emphasising the timelessness of Schubert and the extent to which Schonberg is as much an extension of 19th century musical thought as a radical break with the past.
