Kremer plays Bach

ECM is very pleased to announce the imminent release of a new recording by Gidon Kremer of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo. This is, undoubtedly, one of the major classical music events of the year.

Kremer’s first recording of this music, in 1980 for Phillips, was regarded by many critics as a benchmark interpretation of this work. Kremer’s return to what he calls „the Himalayas of violin literature“ finds him making new discoveries in what is an examplary performance at the very highest artistic level.

The recordings were made in locations closely linked with Kremer’s biography: the sonatas in the Reformation Church of his birthplace, Riga, the partitas in the Pfarrkirche at Lockenhaus, Austria, where he has held his celebrated annual Chamber Music Festival since 1981. The album is released in Central Europe on October 28. U.S. release date is October 11.

Meanwhile ECM listeners are urged to check out the newly released recording of Franz Schubert’s String quartet in G major, in the orchestration by Victor Kissine, as played by Kremerata Baltica. This exceptional chamber orchestra, consisting of talented young players from the Baltic States was founded by Kremer in 1997. Here it matches Kremer’s daring expressiveness throughout a superb performance.
