Press Raves for Katché

“Neighbourhood”, the ECM leader debut of French-African drummer Manu Katché, has been greeted with a great wave of praise from the international press, with several journalists already singling it out as the year’s most outstanding jazz album so far.

Best known in the wider world for his playing in rock and pop contexts (with Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, Sting and all), Katché has also collaborated with saxophonist Jan Garbarek frequently over the last two decades. The drummer had long been a follower of Jan’s - and ECM’s - work: “Since I was a kid I have listened to ECM, and was just amazed by the sound and by the emotions. The musicality when you listen to the whole ECM production, it is something else. It is not just the musicians, the writing and the playing. It is more than that. It is the essence of the music itself”.(Jazzwise interview)

Garbarek, who last year featured Katché on his best-selling “In Praise of Dreams” joined the drummer for “Neighbourhood”, along with trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and his associates Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz.

“Katché has fashioned a sound that epitomizes the global, intercontinental, access-all-areas reality of contemporary jazz.” – Echoes

“Neighbourhood will head my end-of-year list (...) This is music that grows on you – the beautiful, sensual sounds of Stanko’s trumpet and Garbarek’s saxophone weave melodic shapes while Wasilewski’s piano provides the perfect counterpoint with elegant musical inventions of his own.” – Stuart Nicholson, Observer Music Monthly
