SCHIFF, ZEHETMAIR AND THE GERMAN RECORD CRITICS AWARD

In 2005, ECM’s artists are once again honoured by the jury of the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”.

András Schiff, whose complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas has just been launched to great acclaim with the first four sonatas, is awarded a ‘Jahrespreis’– an album of the year prize- in the chamber music category for his and Miklos Perényi’s rendering of the complete music for piano and cello by Beethoven.

The awards ceremony takes place in Berlin on November 19th. Thomas Zehetmair will be honoured the same night with an ‘Ehrenurkunde’ as an outstanding musical personality to be ranked as “one of the most universal violinists of our days, constantly fascinating in a repertoire reaching from the Baroque to modern music, as a soloist, chamber musician and recently even as a conductor”. Zehetmair’s recordings of Heinz Holliger’s violin concerto and the six Sonatas for unaccompanied violin by Eugène Ysaÿe won enormous attention and critical praise in 2004.

In the course of the year, four additional recordings released by ECM in 2005 have been selected in the quarterly shortlists of the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, whose independent honorary jury is comprised of 140 journalists voting in 28 categories:
- “Amicta Sole”, with works by Russian composer Alexander Knaifel, performed, among others, by Tatiana Melentieva, Mstislav Rostropovich
- “Trio”, the international debut of the young Polish piano trio known for its longstanding collaboration with Tomasz Stanko
- “Messe Noire”, Alexei Lubimov’s recital of 20th-century Russian piano music
- “Neighbourhood” ,by Manu Katché with an ensemble consisting of Jan Garbarek, Tomasz Stanko, Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz.

Our congratulations to all these exceptional artists!
