Kurtág Wins Grawemeyer Music Prize

A concerto by György Kurtág has won the 2006 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. „Concertante op. 42“ for violin, viola and orchestra is a 26 minute piece with solos written for violinist Hiromi Kikuchi and violist Ken Hakii, both of whom appeared on Kurtág’s „Signs, Games and Messages“ album on ECM. The Grawemeyer Foundation in Louisville, Kentucky, annually awards a total of a million dollar: five awards of US$ 200,000 for works in music composition, education, ideas improving world order, religion and psychology. Previous music composition prize winners include Pierre Boulez, György Lygeti, Tan Dun, Kaija Saariaho, Krzysztof Penderecki and Toru Takemitsu.

The next Kurtág release on New Series will be the „Kafka Fragmente“ with Juliane Banse and András Keller, due in the new year.
