Paul Motian hits the charts

"Garden of Eden” by the Paul Motian Band has crashed into the Billboard Jazz Traditional Charts in the first week of release, right beneath John Coltrane’s “Live at the Half Note” recordings, and in the near vicinity of Dianne Reeves and Diana Krall.

Chart success caps a spectacular month for Motian which has seen a week of sold-out concerts at the Village Vanguard, and a veritable landslide of press, including major features in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Website “All About Jazz” reviewed “Garden of Eden” three times, and raves proliferate elsewhere.
It seems there is a growing groundswell of attention on the work of the great drummer, who celebrates his 75th birthday in March. Motian has appeared on three ECM recordings in recent months, guesting with the Bobo Stenson Trio on "Goodbye” and renewing his acquaintance with Enrico Rava on "Tati”.

Coming soon from ECM is another disc driven by Motian’s wayward drums: “Change of Heart” by the Martin Speake Quartet, which again includes pianist Stenson plus bassist
Mick Hutton.
