Thomas, Thomas and Tomasz

Three ECM albums have been selected as “artistically outstanding releases” by the jury of Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics Award) for their fourth quarterly shortlist of 2006: Thomas Demenga’s “Chonguri”, Thomas Larcher’s “Ixxu” and the Tomasz Stanko Quartet with “Lontano”.

All three records have met with the approval of the international press as well. Demenga’s carefully compiled programme of encore pieces with Thomas Larcher on the piano and Teodoro Anzelotti on the accordion was “Editor’s Choice” in the November issue of Gramophone. It was given a special recommendation in “FonoForum” and won a “Choc” in Le Monde de la Musique , where it was hailed as “an album that only the ECM label could produce.”

Austrian composer Thomas Larcher’s new chamber pieces on “Ixxu” played by , amongst others, the Rosamunde Quartett, Thomas Demenga and the composer himself at the piano, are described as the “musical equivalent of strong, black coffee” on Music Web and “recommended wholeheartedly”, while the German “klassik.com” praises Larcher for his “incredibly powerful and vital music”.

Tomasz Stanko’s third album with pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz (following on from “Soul of Things” and “Suspended Night”) continues to receive enthusiastic reviews: “It is the best thing Tomasz Stanko has done yet”, writes Richard Lehnert in “Stereophile”, while in the “The Guardian” John Fordham is fully convinced that “the whole empathetic foursome sounds more of one mind than ever”.
