Pärt receives honorary doctorate
On Friday May 4th, composer Arvo Pärt received an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. At the award ceremony the Philharmonic Orchestra of Freiburg played Pärt’s “Summa” and “Fratres” and the Freiburg Cathedral Choir sang “Magnificat”. Celebrations continued on Sunday May 6th at the Freiburger Münster Unserer Lieben Frau, with performances of “Berliner Messe”, “Pari intervallo” and “The Beatitudes”, all documented by SWR for future TV transmission.
Mr Pärt’s most recent ECM recording is “Lamentate”, a detailed analysis of which, by Herbert Glossner, is included in the new book “Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM” published by Granta.
