Manu Katché hits the charts

“Playground” the new album by drummer/bandleader Manu Katché has gone straight into the French jazz charts at #2, is also climbing its way up the French Top 50 pop albums, the German jazz charts at #4 and has already debuted in the German pop charts as well. UK magazine Jazzwise, furthermore, reports that the disc is in currently at the #1 position on HMV’s London Jazz Chart.

Katché is currently on tour with his new line-up featuring Norwegians Trygve Seim (saxes) and Mathias Eick (trumpet), and Poles Marcin Wasilewski (piano) and Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass). The tour climaxes with a concert at Paris’s Theatre des Champs Elyssées on October 8.

Two days later Katché goes right back on the road with the Jan Garbarek Group with an extensive tour running into December. In March and April of 2008 the Katché band tours France.

For details of all dates see the tour pages.

“Katché combines beautifully mutated grooves and softly jazzy themes ... and his drumming transforms the simplest melodies with hustling cymbal patterns and sudden galloping tom-tom spurts. Some themes (’Motion’, ‘Morning Joy’) have an ‘In A Silent Way’ - era Miles feel... Katché’s broad-church connections glow all over a delectable set” – The Guardian
