Arvo Pärt in Dublin

Dublin will host this weekend a celebration of Arvo Pärt at the RTÉ Living Music Festival 2008. The festival in the composer’s presence takes place Friday 15 to Sunday 17 February and features a wide selection of music representing the breadth of Pärt’s distinguished musical career: from large-scale orchestral and choral pieces such as Tabula Rasa and Passio to smaller but no less defining works such as Für Alina and Fratres. Performers include The Hilliard Ensemble, Tõnu Kaljuste and Christopher Bowers-Broadbent. Pärt’s new composition for choir a cappella, “The Deer’s Cry” was given its first performance on February 13 in the Irish cities of Dundalk and Drogehda with the Latvian State Choir conducted by Fergus Sheil.

The close collaboration between Arvo Pärt and ECM was established in 1984 when “Tabula Rasa”, a record featuring, among others, artists such as Gidon Kremer, Keith Jarrett and Dennis Russell Davies, launched the label’s New Series. “Lamentate” which was released to coincide with Pärt’s 70th birthday in September 2005, marked the eleventh Pärt release on ECM. A new album, once again including new compositions in first recordings, is scheduled for autumn 2008.
