Stanko in Polish pop charts

Tomasz Stanko’s newest recording “Dark Eyes” seems set to become one of the most popular recordings of the trumpeter’s long career. In his Polish homeland, it is already a major hit, soaring in the second week of release into the upper reaches of the pop charts. “Dark Eyes” is currently lodged at # 6, several positions ahead of, for instance, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and the late Michael Jackson.

“Dark Eyes” features a new Stanko ensemble, a ‘Nordic’ constellation with two Finnish musicians, Alexi Tuomarila (piano) and Olavi Louhivuori (dums), and two Danes, Jakob Bro (guitar), and Anders Christensen (bass).

Reviews thus far are very positive. Jazzwise: “A big change in direction for Stanko, a sign of the adventurousness and daring he has shown throughout his career...the birth of a fine new band.”

The Stanko quintet is about to embark on a tour of the UK, with dates including London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on November 14.
