“Music of Georges I. Gurdjieff” by the Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble has won Armenia’s National Music Award as Best Folk Album 2011. An award ceremony took place in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on April 15.
The ensemble, founded by Levon Eskenian with the intention of creating ‘ethnographically authentic’ arrangements of Gurdjieff’s music for Eastern Instruments (and thereby returning Gurdjieff’s pieces to their inspirational sources), is currently concluding a European tour.
Their album has met with positive press reactions around the world. As David Honingmann wrote in the Financial Times, “Georges Gurdjieff composed and dictated volumes of piano music. Levon Eskenian’s Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble reclaims these pieces from the salons of Paris and takes them back to their roots in the Caucasus. […] they reveal their origins and themselves.”
