Ernst-von-Siemens-Musikpreis for Friedrich Cerha

Austrian composer Friedrich Cerha has been awarded the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis 2012 at a ceremony in Munich’s Cuvillies Theatre on Friday, 22nd of June. Cerha received the award from the president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Dieter Borchmeyer.

In a statement the Ernst-von-Siemens Foundation, who awards the prize since 1974, hailed Cerha (b. 1926) as “a master of impressive aural landscapes”.
Earlier recipients of the arward included Luciano Berio, Benjamin Britten, Henri Dutilleux, Heinz Holliger, Gidon Kremer and György Kurtàg.

Friedrich Cerha’s “Konzert für Violoncello und Orchester” has been recorded for ECM New Series by Heinrich Schiff and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestras, directed by Peter Eötvös, in 2003.
