Carolin Widmann is Artist of the Year at ICMA Awards

The Jury of the International Classical Music Awards – ICMA - has named Carolin Widmann their “Artist Of The Year”, recognizing that “the German violinist has turned into one of the outstanding – and most uncompromising — musical personalities of our age. Her sensitivity and intelligence as an interpreter enable her to express the deepest emotions in the romantic sonatas by Schumann or Schubert, while at the same time feeding her curiosity for contemporary music and the exploration of experimental sonorities.”

Carolin Widmann’s last album was a recording of music by Franz Schubert (Fantasie/Rondo/Sonate) together with pianist Alexander Lonquich on ECM New Series in early 2012. Her new recording of by Morton Feldman’s Violin and Orchestra will be released on ECM New Series this May.

The winners received the ICMA Trophies during the annual Award Ceremony, which took place this year in Milan, Italy, on March 18. The International Classical Music Awards jury is comprised of music critics from leading classical magazines, online services and radio stations: Andante (Turkey), Classic Radio (Finland), Crescendo (Belgium), Fono Forum (Germany), Gramofon (Hungary), IMZ (Austria), Kultura (Russia) MDR-Figaro (Germany), Musica (Italy), Musik & Theater (Switzerland), Orpheus Radio (Russia), Opera (UK), Pizzicato (Luxembourg), Radio 100,7 (Luxembourg), Resmusica.com (France), Rondo Classic (Finland), and Scherzo (Spain).

It is the second consecutive year with an ECM artist winning an IMCA award as in 2012 András Schiff’s recording Geistervariationen with piano music of Robert Schumann was voted Recording of the Year in the Solo Instrument category.
