Silvestrov Featured In Basel Festival

The work of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov (whose “Requiem for Larissa” has just been issued by ECM New Series) is at the centre of a major festival in Basel, Switzerland, running from October 26th to November 14th. Spotlighting Ukrainian themes, the festival has the working title “Soundscapes Ukraine”.
Silvestrov’s work will be performed by different ensembles and soloists in a variety of concerts around Basel. Contributing artists will include pianist Alexei Lubimov, the Rosamunde Quartet, Christoph Poppen conducting the Basel Chamber Orchestra, and many others.

Augmenting the musical programme are symposiums and readings, with the themes “Literature from Czernowitz”, “Chernobyl Today” and, on October 29th, “Valentin Silvestrov in Context” with participants including producer Manfred Eicher, writer Paul Griffiths (who is also Elliott Carter’s librettist on “What Next?”) and Tatjana Frumkis.

Additionally there will be exhibitions and documentary films shown throughout the festival.

More details will follow in the near future.
