Jarrett Prize, New Album

On 7th July, Keith Jarrett received the Leonie Sonning Prize, one of Europe’s major music awards. It was presented to him shortly before the Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette trio’s performance at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Copenhagen.

The last jazz musician to win the award was Miles Davis, 20 years ago, although artists associated with ECM New Series, including composers György Kurtág and Heinz Holliger, pianist András Schiff and violinist Gidon Kremer have also been recipients.

From the jury’s citation: “Keith Jarrett has experimented and modernized music without rejecting tradition, uncorrupted by the times and by music’s trends and caprices… He has created his own unmistakable language through his exquisite fantasy and intelligence.” The Sonning Prize is the second major award for Jarrett in recent months. In May 2003 he was presented with the Polar Music Prize.

The trio’s tour continues with concerts in Perugia (July 11), Barcelona (July 13), Antibes (July 16) and Verona (July 19).

ECM releases a new live album by Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette on August 30. Entitled “The Out-of-Towners”, it documents an inspired performance embracing both standards and improvised material, and was recorded at the State Opera, Munich, in July 2001,
