Praemium Imperiale for Arvo Pärt

Arvo Pärt has won the 2014 Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award for music. The awards, in various fields, are presented annually by the Japan Art Association and recognize lifetime achievement in the arts.

The Imperiale prize has been presented since 1989 by the Japanese imperial family through the Japan Art Association. Five laureates are selected in the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre/film based on their remarkable achievements in developing their field at an international level and the contributions they have made to enrich society worldwide. It is the most prominent art award in the world, considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field of culture.

In a statement the jury called Pärt “one of the most unique voices in the world of music” and added: “His intense, passionate compositions are admired by musicians from all genres.”

This year’s other winners are South African playwright Athol Fugard, US architect Steven Holl, French painter Martial Raysse, Italian sculptor Giuseppe Penone, and the Zinsou Foundation in Benin, Africa, which supports contemporary African art.

The prizes will be presented in Tokyo on Oct. 15.
