SCHIFF LEADS NEW SERIES ARTISTS AT WEIMAR FESTIVAL

András Schiff is artist-in-residence at this year’s Kunstfest Weimar, subtitled “Pèlerinages” (Pilgrimage). The festival, running for four weeks from August 20th features a great deal of music, much of it from New Series recordings artists.

The programme includes Heiner Goebbels with the Ensemble Modern and Josef Bierbichler performing “Eislermaterial” (August 26), András Schiff playing Beethoven (September 5 and 8), Heinz Holliger’s “Beiseit” with the full cast of the ECM recording, including David James, Elmar Schmid and Teodoro Anzellotti, plus Schiff and Peter Schreier performing Schumann songs (September 7), author Imre Kertész reads to the accompaniment of Schiff’s piano (September 10). A series of chamber music concerts - with András Schiff, Miklós Perenyi, the Panocha Quartet, and members of Cappella Andrea Barca – present music of Janáčeck (September 12), Brahms, Bartók and Schumann (September 14), Smetana, Janáček and Dvorak (September 15), Schubert, Mozart, and Johann Strauss as arranged by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern (September 16). Schiff conducts Schumann (September 17) and Mozart (September 19), and Juliane Banse and Christoph Poppen perform Kurtág’s epigrammatic “Kafka Fragments” (September 18).
