Mitchell, Parker, Stanko play Munich Symposium
“Unforeseen” is the title of an International Symposium for Improvised Music being held in Munich from 8th to 12th September 2004.
The symposium, which includes workshops and lectures as well as concerts, is the result of a collaboration between the Cultural Department of the City of Munich and the Institute of Musicology at the Ludwig Maximilian University.
For this event , Roscoe Mitchell and Evan Parker were commissioned to write new music for a special transatlantic ensemble that they have assembled, whose line-up comprises, in addition to the saxophones of the two leaders, Corey Wilkes (trumpet), Anders Svanoe (saxophones), John Rangecroft (clarinet), Neil Metcalfe (flute), Philipp Wachsmann (violin, electronics), Nils Bultmann (viola), Marcio Mattos (cello), Craig Taborn (piano, electronics), Barry Guy and Jaribu Shahid (basses), Tani Tabbal (drums, percussion), and Paul Lytton (drums, percussion, electronics).
This is an historic coming together of two of the leading innovators in post-Coltrane improvisation, and is not to be missed by anyone interested in the cutting edge of contemporary jazz expression. The Parker and Mitchell concerts are on September 10 and September 11 in Munich's Muffathalle, and begin at 8 o’clock.
On September 9, Tomasz Stanko plays the same venue, with his highly popular Polish quartet , featuring Marcin Wasilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double-bass) and Michal Miskiewicz (drums). This is the band whose albums “Soul of Things” and "Suspended Night” have received the highest international praise.
In the afternoons of 9, 10 and 11 September, Walter Fähndrich (well-known for his 1989 New Series recording “Viola”) will lead a seminar/workshop on “improvised chamber music and free improvisation”). And in the nights, beginning at 10:30 p.m, there will be a series of experimental concerts at the Black Box in Munich’s Gasteig including Italian trombonist Sebi Tramontana with the group 48nord and many others.
Fifteen lectures on the most diverse aspects of the history and development of improvisation will also take place throughout the symposium. For more details: www.unforeseen.de
