About ECM
January 31 , 2005

As previously announced, ECM New Series albums featuring Heinz Holliger’s Violin Concerto, with Thomas Zehetmair as soloist, and András Schiff and Miklós Perényi’s account of Beethoven’s Complete Music for Piano and Violoncello, collected prizes at the first MIDEM Classical Awards ceremony in Cannes. Schiff and Perényi were winners in the Chamber Music category, Holliger in Contemporary Composition.

The jury was comprised of critics from international publications including Gramophone (UK), Fono Forum (Germany), Le Monde de la Musique (France), Musik & Theater (Switzerland), Scherzo (Spain) and others, as well as industry professionals.

Some extracts from the jury’s eulogies:

Schiff/Perényi: “While Bach’s six Solo Suites are admired among cellists as the Old Testament of their repertoire, Beethoven’s sonatas may, at the very least, claim to be an important gospel of the respective New Testament. (…) A breathtaking performance. There is simply nothing to be criticized, no areas that have not been deeply experienced…”

Holliger/Zehetmair: “A beautiful recording of an amazing performance of a magnificent composition. The composer was inspired by works of painter/violinist Louis Soutter and his teacher, Eugène Ysaÿe.(…) In the creation and performance of this concerto Holliger as composer and conductor has shown himself the successor of Hermann Scherchen, Paul Sacher and Bruno Maderna – musicians whose art gave rise to new ways in music, without rejecting traditions. (…) Thomas Zehetmair creates a fascinating interpretation, perfectly showing us the transformation of Ysaÿe’s 3rd Sonata in the music of Holliger.”

These fine New Series recordings are available at good record shops everywhere and, of course, directly from this web site.
