ZEHETMAIR AND HOLLIGER WIN BELGIAN PRIZES

Thomas Zehetmair’s highly acclaimed last recordings – the Solo sonatas for Violin by Eugène Ysaÿe and his rendering of Hans Holliger’s Violin concerto “Hommage à Louis Soutter” under the composer’s baton – both released by ECM in 2004 were awarded two Caecilia Awards in Brussels. For his Ysaÿe -recording Zehetmair additionally won the Snepvangers prize for outstanding interpretations of Belgian music. Furthermore Zehetmair is one of the very few artists to be honoured in two consecutive years.

Founded in 1974, the Cecilia Awards annually distinguish ten recordings without regard to categories. Its jury is composed of Belgian music critics, equally divided between the Flemish and the French speaking community.

Thomas Zehetmair expressed his happiness that, with Holliger’s Concerto, “an exciting piece is awarded, a piece that challenges the listeners ears with most sophisticated sounds.”
Eugène Ysaÿe s Sonatas, he added, “are, in the most original sense, a fantastic completion to the violinists’ ‘old testament’, Bach and Paganini. Ysaÿe, the musician, in his versatility as soloist, conductor and leader of his quartet has always been a model for me.”
