Trio Mediaeval: New album and concert in Venice

Trio Mediaeval, the Norwegian-Swedish vocal trio founded in 1997, enjoyed enormous success on both sides of the Atlantic with its two previous ECM discs “Words of the Angel” and “Soir, dit-elle”. Now their third album “Stella Maris” is scheduled for release at the end of September. The new disc combines and contrasts English and French music of the 13th and 14th centuries with contemporary music of Korean composer Sungji Hong (born 1973).

On October 8, at the church San Clemente in Venice, the trio will sing music from Hong’s mass “Lumen de Lumine” and other repertoire from “Stella Maris”.

A beautiful church built in 1131, San Clemente is situated on an island close to Piazza San Marco – an appropriately atmospheric location for the trio’s music. Trio Mediaeval is Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth and Torunn Østrem Ossum. As the New York Times wrote recently, “Three hip and lively Scandinavian women… all three singers, though highly individual in vocal colour and approach, can function as highflying sopranos , pure and bright. Ms. Ossum, possessing a particularly wide range, anchors the harmonies with rich and velvety lower notes.”
