Sooner and Later

Julia Hülsmann Trio

EN / DE
Berlin-based pianist Julia Hülsmann returns to the trio format for Sooner And Later, an album which distils the experience of journeys to distant destinations. In the last couple of years Hülsmann, bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köbberling have taken their music around the world, from Europe to the US, Canada, Peru, Central Asia and China, “where something special developed. It helped to open up new sonic territory for us”. The Central-Asian weeks find their most explicit echo in the form of “Biz Joluktuk”, a tune the band heard in performance from a 12 year old violinist in Kyrgyzstan and which was later re-harmonized by Julia.  Once again all three members of the trio have contributed compositions to the album.  The title of Hulsmann’s “Thatpujai” is an anagram of “Jutta Hipp”, and its theme is comprised of phrases from the late German  jazz pianist’s solos.  The program is rounded out by a cover of Radiohead’s  “All I Need”  which, like the Hülsmann-penned tracks “J.J.”, “Soon” or “Mond” with their sometimes almost clubby grooves, emphasizes the subtle rhythmic aspects of the trio’s music.  Sooner And Later was recorded in September 2016 in Oslo’s Rainbow Studio, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Hülsmann is a visionary who can see (jazz) room to manoeuvre in disparate sources, and not just in a stray Kirghiz tune, for after ‘Biz Joluktuk’ comes the trio’s take on Radiohead’s ‘All I Need’. The opener, ‘From Afar’, is the one that will first catch the listener's attention, being sultry and languorous and leafy. It has gorgeous interplay between Hülsmann's mellifluous piano lines and those stout woody notes ground out by double bassist Marc Muellbauer. Meanwhile, drummer Heinrich Köbberling’s shimmering cymbal work is well forward in the mix. The second track, is intriguingly entitled ‘Thatpujai’. No, nothing Kirghiz here, it’s an anagram of the name of the late jazz pianist Jutta Hipp and, by way of tribute, the tune comprises phrases from her Hipp’s work. […]  A fine record.

Eine sehr konturierte, präzise, vieldeutige Musik. Zu schön, um nicht wahr zu sein.
Peter Rüedi, Die Weltwoche

The band consistently speak with one voice (she and bassist Marc Muellbauer often drop in and out of unison passages), and the coalescing conversation of ‘From Afar’ epitomises that in its brief piano motifs, answering double bass, and slowly gelling harmonies. Hülsmann’s meditative dynamism resonates through ‘Thatpujai’ (formed of solo phrases by the late German jazz pianist Jutta Hipp); drummer Heinrich Köbberling’s ‘You & You’ becomes almost Jarrett-like; the Kyrgyzstan folk tune ‘Biz Joluktuk’ is classically delicate; ‘JJ’ is relaxed and boppish, and Radiohead’s ‘All I Need’ suggests Hülsmann has listened to Brad Mehldau’s investigations of the same source. It’s a quietly classy and vivacious set.
John Fordham, The Guardian

Reiner H. Nitschke, Stereo

‘Sooner And Later’ is an album that grows in appeal with repeated listening. The trio masters interplay and while that dynamic takes precedence over solo time, there are numerous opportunities to appreciate each of the players individually. The quieter moments are warm and enveloping, each with a distinct personality. Where the trio displays their more energetic side, they show a brilliance for creating complex and highly engaging melodies. ‘Sooner And Later’ is a significant achievement for a trio that had set a high bar, long ago.

With Sooner and Later, her sixth ECM album, Julia Hülsmann returns to the trio format of her successful recordings End of a Summer (2008) and Imprint (2011). The Berlin pianist calls Sooner and Later “ a product of the last two or three years – though these had been filled with a lot of non-trio activities such as the concerts supporting the quartet recording In Full View (2013) and the quintet album A Clear Midnight – Kurt Weill and America featuring singer Theo Bleckmann (2015).

But, as the pianist is ready to point out, not only were her partners in the trio, bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köbberling, involved in most of these ventures, in between them the trio undertook extensive travels to distant destinations – among them the US, Canada, Peru, Central Asia and China – „there something special developed within the trio. When traveling you not only gain new perspectives, but also experience even long standing partners anew. It helped to open up new sonic territory for us“.

The Central-Asian weeks find their most explicit expression on the new album in the form of „Biz Joluktuk“ – a tune the band heard in performance from a 12 year old violinist in Kyrgyzstan and which was later re-harmonized by Julia. Once again all three members of the group have contributed compositions to a Hülsmann trio album. “Heinrich’s pieces all start, as you would expect from a drummer, on a rhythmic level”, explains Hülsmann, “but then he always surprises me with his very friendly melodies. He infuses very special harmonic colors into our sound.” Whereas Marc Muellbauer’s compositions, as Hülsmann puts it, “are mostly based on quite complex, very clever harmonics – but when you finally play them, they reveal a great clarity and self-evidence.”

Hülsmann’s own pieces have all been for quite a while part of the band’s stage repertoire, “where they could develop and mature in a very natural, organic way”, as the leader says. The title of her piece “Thatpujai” is an anagram of “Jutta Hipp”, and its theme is comprised of phrases from the late German jazz pianist’s solos.

The program is rounded out by „All I Need“, a song originally from UK rock group Radiohead. Like the Hülsmann-penned tracks „J.J.“, „Soon“ or „Mond“ with their sometimes almost clubby grooves, it emphasizes the subtle rhythmic aspects of their music, unheard of on the trio’s earlier recordings.
